In Málaga, air conditioning isn't a luxury: with the summers we get, it's close to a necessity. If you're thinking of installing it, the first question is what it will cost. Here are real prices by system type, what the quote includes, and what pushes it up, so there are no surprises.
The cost of installing air conditioning in Málaga
The cost depends mainly on the type of system and how many rooms you want to cool. These figures are a useful reference for a turnkey installation:
- Split (one room): roughly €600 - €1,200, unit and installation included. The most common choice for a bedroom or living room.
- Multi-split (2-4 rooms): roughly €1,500 - €3,500. A single outdoor unit connected to several indoor units.
- Ducted (whole home): from €3,000 upwards. The most discreet and efficient, but it needs a false ceiling and building work.
These are indicative: the final quote depends on the power (frigorías / BTU), the brand, the distance between units and the difficulty of the installation. For an accurate figure, a site visit is what counts.
What does the price include?
A proper air conditioning quote should include:
- The unit (indoor and outdoor) with the right power for the room.
- Fitting both units and securing them.
- A few metres of copper pipe, drainage and cabling between the units.
- Vacuuming, gas charge and commissioning.
- Removing the packaging and cleaning up.
Quoted separately: long pipe runs, building work (channels, false ceiling), crane hire if the outdoor unit goes high up, and a new electrical circuit if the consumer unit has no spare way for it.
Split, multi-split or ducted?
Split: the cheapest option if you only want to cool one room. One outdoor unit per indoor unit.
Multi-split: a single outdoor unit feeds several indoor units. It avoids covering the façade with units and usually pays off from two or three rooms.
Ducted: air is distributed through grilles from a unit hidden in the false ceiling. It's the most expensive and needs building work, but also the most discreet, quiet and efficient way to cool the whole home evenly. If you want an all-in-one solution, it's worth comparing with an aerothermal heat pump.
Mind the electrical side
Air conditioning is one of the most power-hungry appliances, especially on start-up. Before installing one (or several), check two things:
- Your contracted power: if you're near your limit, switching on the AC alongside other appliances will trip the power. We explain it in why your AC trips the electricity and in the contracted power guide.
- Your consumer unit: ideally the AC has its own circuit with its own breaker. If your consumer unit is old, it may need upgrading.
What moves the price
- Power (BTU / frigorías): the more space to cool, the more powerful and expensive the unit.
- Brand and efficiency: A+++ units cost more but use far less over a Málaga summer.
- Distance between units: more copper pipe means more material and labour.
- Access difficulty: outdoor units high up or in awkward patios add cost.
- Building work: ducted systems always involve some construction.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to install air conditioning in Málaga?
A single-room split typically costs €600 to €1,200 installed. A multi-split for several rooms runs €1,500 to €3,500, and a ducted system for the whole home from €3,000 upwards.
What does the installation price include?
The unit, fitting the indoor and outdoor units, a few metres of pipe and cabling, vacuuming and gas charge, commissioning, and removing the packaging. Long runs, building work or new electrical circuits are quoted separately.
Split or multi-split, which is better?
For a single room, a split is cheaper. For several rooms, a multi-split avoids covering the façade with units and usually works out better. For the whole home, ducted is the most discreet and efficient.
Do I need to increase my contracted power?
It depends on your current power and other appliances. AC draws a lot on start-up, so if you're near your limit it can trip the power. Check your power and consumer unit before installing several units.
How long does installation take?
A simple split takes about 3-4 hours. A multi-split or an installation with long pipe runs can take a full day, and ducted systems several days because they need building work.
