When Should You Replace Your Electrical Panel?

Old Porcelain Fuse Box

If your property still has a porcelain fuse box — common in 1960s-80s Málaga buildings — it is outdated and potentially dangerous. These old fuse boxes lack modern safety features and should be replaced with a current consumer unit.

Circuit Breakers Keep Tripping

Frequent tripping is a sign that your panel is overloaded or that the protective devices are not correctly rated for your circuits. A new panel with properly sized breakers resolves this.

Need More Circuits

Installing solar panels, an EV charger or air conditioning often requires additional circuits. If your current panel has no spare capacity, it is time to upgrade.

No RCD (Safety Switch) Fitted

An RCD (diferencial) is your main protection against electric shock. Many older panels in Málaga have no RCD at all. Fitting one — or upgrading to the correct type — is essential for safety.

REBT 2026 Regulations

The new Spanish electrical regulations (REBT 2026) introduce important changes that affect electrical panels. Type AC RCDs are being phased out in favour of type A or higher, which offer better protection against the pulsating DC leakage currents generated by modern electronics, inverters and EV chargers.

Additionally, surge protection is now mandatory for all new installations and major renovations. This protects your appliances and electronics from voltage spikes.
