Your LED lights flicker and you cannot tell whether it is the lamp, the switch, or something more serious. The answer rests almost entirely on a question hardly anyone asks first: is it one fitting, or several at once?
That distinction separates an annoyance from a warning. One lamp flickering is a problem with that lamp. Several flickering together is a problem with the installation, and that is worth looking at. Here is how to tell them apart without any tools.
Case A: a single fitting flickers
The most common situation and the least worrying. The usual causes, in order:
1. A dimmer that is not made for LEDs
Cause number one after switching to LED. Older dimmers were designed for incandescent or halogen lamps, which drew vastly more power. An LED draws so little that the dimmer cannot work stably, and the result is flicker, buzzing, or lights that will not dim fully.
The fix is not swapping bulbs repeatedly: it is replacing the dimmer with one designed for LEDs and using lamps marked dimmable. Lamps that are not marked dimmable will not become so however many you try.
2. The lamp or its driver
Every LED has electronics inside. When those start to fail, flicker appears. It is also the part most heavily cost-reduced on budget lamps, which is why they often last a good deal less than the box claims.
3. Poor contact in the lampholder
A loosely seated lamp or a holder with a tired contact gives intermittent flicker, often when someone walks past or a door closes. Switch off, tighten, retest.
Case B: several lights flicker at once
This is a different conversation. If flicker affects several rooms, or the whole property, it is not the bulb.
1. Voltage drop when something large starts
The washing machine, the air conditioning or a pump draws a surge on start-up. A very brief dip at that instant can be normal. It stops being normal when it is pronounced, when it happens constantly, or when small appliances cause it: that points to a circuit running close to its limit or cable that is undersized.
2. A loose connection
This is the one that matters. A loose terminal in the board, a degraded joint or a poorly made neutral connection produce flicker that comes and goes, often in several places at once.
It matters because a loose connection does not just flicker: it generates heat at a point of the installation never designed to get hot. That is the same mechanism behind a good share of the scorched sockets we are called to. If there is a smell too, act as described in a burning smell from a socket or consumer unit.
3. Something on the supply side
If neighbours notice it too, the origin may be outside your property altogether. Worth asking before you start changing things inside the house.
How to tell in five minutes
- Count how many lights flicker. One, or several. It is the single most informative fact.
- Try the lamp in a different fitting. If the flicker travels with it, you have your answer.
- Notice what it coincides with. Does it happen when the washing machine, the AC or the pool pump starts?
- Check whether there is a dimmer on that circuit, and whether the lamp says "dimmable".
- Ask a neighbour whether they see it too, especially in a block of flats.
When to call without deliberating further
If several lights flicker together and no particular appliance is causing it.
If there is buzzing, heat or smell at a switch, socket or the consumer unit.
If flicker started suddenly without you changing a lamp or adding anything.

Why this shows up so often after switching to LED
When a house ran on halogens, small defects stayed hidden: an incandescent lamp draws so much that it masks irregularities an LED, with its tiny draw and its onboard electronics, reveals immediately.
Which makes the switch to LED a good moment to review the lighting installation rather than replacing lamps one at a time. The savings are still worth having — covered in how much you save switching to LED — but it is worth doing with the right dimmer and circuit from the start.
